Kindergarten joined the rest of Broulee Public to play their part in Clean Up Australia Day today. The students were so excited to be doing their bit to help our environment and take action by picking up rubbish in and around the garden area, the demountable classroom, the area beside the carpark and through to, and around the administration block. We were very pleased at how genuinely the students took to this and how proud they were of themselves for taking action. Well done Kindy!

On Friday we had our weekly STEM challenge. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
KE and KD have been reading the book 'The Little Red Hen' this week. In the story the Little Red Hen needs help with her chores. Our challenge this week was to create something to help get jobs done at home or at school. We had some very creative inventions! Please see the pictures and captions below. Kindergarten students in K/1W have been exploring the rhyme of Hickory, Dickory Dock. For their STEM Challenge this week, the children needed to make a clock, with the criteria of it needing: a face, some numbers, two hands and it needed to hold a ring tailed lemur! The Year One students have been looking at different periods of time in their History lessons, so it followed that their challenge was to build a Time Machine to transport something to 3 different time periods. All of the students had a wonderful time creatively problem solving and their independent thinking was admirable! How do you group things? Our Kindergarten students came up with many different ways! They grouped things according to colour, the number of legs, vehicles that moved on land, in the air or on the water, things with wheels, animals that can swim, animals that can crawl, animals that can climb, things you can eat, and one even sorted animals according to which era of time they lived in! The concept of grouping is the beginning, and basis of, deeper mathematical understandings. The children all had a great time sorting, grouping and verbalising their reasonings.
One of our Literacy Group rotations during our morning sessions includes a fine motor activity. These activities help strengthen muscles and help the children develop and refine small motor movements - they are super fun and sometimes challenging too! Each Tuesday afternoon, both Kindergarten classes, along with K/1W, join together to rotate in six groups across six activity stations. Children engage in a range of fundamental movement skill tasks, along with activities to develop balance, body and spatial awareness, strength and fitness. Helpers are always appreciated - please come along any Tuesday from 1:40pm! |
