In recognition of NAIDOC week coming up from the 7th-15th of July, every child from K-6 participated in a range of activities yesterday stemming from our Indigenous Australian culture. Ray Smith and Nellie Johnson from the National Indigenous Australians Agency joined us and introduced the children to four traditional Indigenous outdoor games - where a lot of skill was required to 'hunt' native animals. The children also listened to traditional stories; learned a song in our local Indigenous language, Dhuruga; completed some artwork around the theme Voice, Truth, Treaty; cooked and ate some traditional Johnny Cakes and walked around our local bushland identifying native plants. It was a wonderful day of learning experiences for all. The activities that Ray and Nellie did with us were: Kee’an- a game of throwing skill played in areas of North Queensland. A large animal bone (Fox tail) is thrown over the goal post and into a pit or hole. Great skill is required to aim the bone - great preparation for hunting! Tarnambai - On Bathurst Island, children collected the seed heads of the spring rolling grass (spinifex). They took the seed heads to the beach and tossed them into the air where they were blown along by the wind. We threw foam balls, waited for them to roll past the cones, then tried to pick them up while running at full speed. Gorri- played by Aboriginal people in all parts of Australia. The big red ball was a kangaroo and as it rolled and bounced past us, we threw our spears (tennis balls) using accuracy of the eye and speed. Our NAIDOC activity day culminated in an assembly run by our Indigenous students. Some of the activities undertaken throughout the day were showcased, including the song learned by K-2 students. How lucky is Broulee Public School?! We were treated to an amazing performance from the Sydney Boys Grammar School concert band on Tuesday - they were Ah-MAZING! Some photos and videos are below for you to enjoy. What a wonderful day we had on Wednesday for our athletics carnival. We were so very proud of our Kindergarten students for their comradery, enthusiasm and perseverance - they also had a lot of fun! Well done Kindy! Each Tuesday afternoon, different classes throughout the school visit Banksia Village. The children chat with the residents, read to and with them, draw or even play a game. It's such a wonderful time for both students and residents to share with each other. |
